The common brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) is a butterfly of the Pieridae family. It lives in Europe, North Africa and Asia. Across much of its range, it is the only species of its genus, and is therefore simply known locally as the brimstone. The name "butterfly" is believed to have originated from the brimstone — which was called the butter-coloured fly by early British naturalists.

The European peacock (Aglais io), more commonly known simply as the Peacock butterfly, is a colourful butterfly, found in Europe and temperate Asia as far east as Japan.

The red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.

The two-tailed pasha or foxy emperor (Charaxes jasius) is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. It is the only European species of the genus Charaxes. Charaxes jasius occurs in the Mediterranean region and Africa.

The Old World swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. The butterfly is also known as the common yellow swallowtail or simply the swallowtail (a common name applied to all members of the family, but this species is the 'original', first to go by the name). It is the type species of the genus Papilio.

The mourning cloak in North America and the Camberwell beauty in Britain, Nymphalis antiopa, is a large butterfly native to Eurasia and North America.

The blackleg tortoiseshell or large tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros) is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. This species can be found in most of Europe, in northern Africa, and in western Asia.

The poplar admiral (Limenitis populi) is a butterfly in the heliconiine subfamily of the Nymphalidae family. Poplar admiral habitat is widespread in continental Europe and many areas in Asia.

The ailanthus silkmoth (Samia cynthia) is a saturniid moth, used to produce silk fabric but not as domesticated as the silkworm, Bombyx mori.
