The winged argonaut (Argonauta hians), or muddy argonaut, is a rare, pelagic octopus known for the female's paper-thin, coiled eggshell used as a flotation device, earning it the "paper nautilus" name, and its distinctive grey-brown colour. These free-swimming octopuses drift in open seas, often clinging to jellyfish for camouflage, defence and food, with males being tiny and females creating their own unique shell to carry thousands of eggs as they float in the water column. |
