Western spadefoot toad (Spea hammondii)

The western spadefoot toad shuns the desert surface for most of the year. It emerges from dormancy underground to feed and breed only when heavy rainfall moistens the soil. The toad returns to its subterranean shelter before the landscape dries out again.
