Hooded tanager, Nemosia pileata in Suriname
Photo of a male hooded tanager, made by Foek Chin Joe in
Suriname in 2005. The female lacks the black cap and has more
blue-gray, but has the same yellow eyes and legs as the male. The
hooded tanagers like the coastal region and can for instance be
found in mangroves and on sand ridges, but also in the
Cultuurtuin. It is rarely seen in the rest of Suriname. They eat
mostly insects, that they search for in trees. This is a
sound of the Hooded tanager
Each small square indicates the observation of at least one
(group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations
on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of
each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna
and red for rainforest.
