Orange oakleaf (Kallima inachus)

The orange oakleaf, Kallima inachus, is a nymphalid butterfly found throughout much of tropical Asia. With wings closed (and only the undersides visible), members of this species closely resemble dry, dead leaves. The topsides of their wings are a deep blue on the base level, with shades of yellow, orange, brown and black mixed on top. Wingspans range from around 3.3 to 4.3 inches and, as with many butterfly species, females are often larger than males. This is a polyphenic species, with those thriving in the wet tropical areas being a bit smaller and darker than their dry area cousins, on average.
