조류 중 가장 작은 새로서 몸은 회갈색 바탕에 갈색, 흑색, 회색 등의 복잡한 무늬이 깃털로 되어있다.
나무의 수피와 비슷하여, 착지하여 있을 때에는 수피와 새을 구별하기가 어렵다.
