English: Two vaquitas. The vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is a critically endangered porpoise species endemic to the northern part of the Gulf of California. It is considered the smallest and most endangered cetacean in the world.
Vaquita photo taken under permit (Oficio No. DR/488/08) from the Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT), within a natural protected area subject to special management and decreed as such by the Mexican Government.

The vaquita (Phocoena sinus; Cochimí: va-güi-tua) is a rare species of porpoise endemic to the northern part of the Gulf of California. The word vaquita is Spanish for "little cow". Other names include cochito (Spanish for "pig" or "sow"), desert porpoise, vaquita porpoise, Gulf of California harbor porpoise, Gulf of California porpoise, and gulf porpoise. It is in imminent danger of extinction. Order: Artiodactyla, Infraorder: Cetacea, Family: Phocoenidae, Genus: Phocoena, Species: Phocoena sinus Norris & McFarland, 1958. |
