Short-nosed echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus)

Echidnas live a surprisingly long time. One short-nosed echidna that was kept in a zoo lived for more than 50 years. Out in the wild their life expectancy is probably shorter, although they have few natural enemies today. Their spiny defences may have evolved to protect them from predators that are now extinct (such as the marsupial lion, once common in Australia).
