Gymnocorymbus ternetzi - black tetra, black skirt tetra, petticoat tetra, high-fin black skirt tetra, black widow tetra, blackamoor
The black tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi), also known as the black skirt tetra, petticoat tetra, high-fin black skirt tetra, black widow tetra, and blackamoor, is a freshwater fish belonging to the characin family (Characidae). The black tetra has a roughly tetragonal body shape, growing up to 7.5 cm long. It has coloration ranging from near black at the tail to lighter shades toward the nose. Two prominent black vertical bars appear just behind the gills. This elegant fish is native to the Paraguay River basin in south-central Brazil, Paraguay, and northeast Argentina.
