인도코끼리 Elephas maximus (Indian Elephant)
코끼리과에 딸린 동물. 어깨 높이 2.5~3m, 몸무게 4톤쯤이며 아프리카코끼리보다 좀 작다. 상아는 수컷은 보통 길어서 2.4m쯤 되지만 암컷의 것은 짧아서 밖으로 드러나지 않는다. 발굽은 앞발에 5개, 뒷발에 4개가 있다. 인도, 스리랑카, 미얀마, 수마트라 등지의 삼림에 분포한다.
