Spot-backed antbird, male in Suriname

Spot-backed antbird

Photo made by J.S. Dunning in Suriname (1976, above, a female)
and one photo of a male, made by Brian O'Shea on the Brownsberg
in 2003. The
sound
of a Spot-backed antbird
was recorded by Otte Ottema in the
Bakhuis area in Suriname in May 2006. It is a bird of the
underground of the forest (as many antbirds) and is often heard
at the Brownsberg. It does indeed, as you would expect from its
name, find food that is chased by army ants, but also without
that help in the forest.

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one
(group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations
on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of
each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna
and red for rainforest.
