형태적 특성
체형은 날렵하고 강하게 돌고래류의 대표적인 형태이다. 체측에 황토색과 회흑색의 모래시계 무늬가 가장 큰 특징이다.
등은 흑청색이며 복부는 회백색이다. 눈과 항문사이가 황토색이고 그 사이에 회백색띠가 아치형으로
꼬리지느러미까지 연결되어 있다.
긴부리참돌고래에 비해 몸체는 비교적 땅딸막하고 비교적 짧은 부리를 가졌다.
