Spiny softshell turtle (Apalone spinifera)
With its flattened body and sandy colouration, the spiny softshell turtle of North America can lie invisible in the silt on riverbeds. It is a fast and agile swimmer that preys on aquatic insects, crawfish, fish and, in some cases, molluscs. Large individuals may even catch ducks by snapping at their feet and pulling them beneath the water surface. |
