It soon became apparent that the area we’d stopped in was actually right on the boundary of two pairs of woodpeckers. Now, this is a species that (to quote the superb Collins Field Guide) “spends much time high up in tree crowns”, and I would highly recommend that if you want to see much more than a small woodpecker’s underparts way, way above you that you find such a meeting-place and let the woodpeckers come to you.
