The Indian pitta is a plump, long-legged, almost tailless bird adapted for life on the forest floor. When threatened, it may escape by making a short flight low over the ground or by a series of quick, bounding hops. Often, however, the bird simply turns away from a likely predator, so that its back is facing the enemy, and stands motionless in the hope that it will be overlooked. |
