Because of their large ears, white belly, and tight stripes, Grevy's are often considered to be the most handsome of zebra species.
The striped pattern of zebras helps zebra groups blend together when seen at a distance. While stallion zebras are solitary and territorial, nursing mares, foals, other females and bachelor males can be found in groups.
Newly born zebras are white and brown, and their adult stripe pattern develops at about four months of age. Zebra babies are able to recognize their mothers by the pattern of their stripes, distinct to each individual zebra. |
