DUCK-MOLE. -- Last among the known mammals is the strange and aptly named Duck-mole. It is web-footed and lays eggs, like a Duck, and burrows in river banks like a Mole or a Beaver, but spends most of its waking moments in the water searching for the aquatic insects and Mollusks which constitute its food. The platypus or duck-billed platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semiaquatic egg-laying mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. It is one of the extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth.
