In Haplophryne mollis (=Edriolychnus schmidti), the vascular systems of the male and female become integrated, most of the male's organs degenerate, and, as a result, he becomes nothing more than a male reproductive organ attached to the female (Bertelsen, 1951). At this point, it is questionable whether what remains is a female with a parasitic male or a single hermaphroditic fish. |
