Hoplostethus atlanticus - orange roughy, red roughy, slimehead, deep sea perch
The orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) is a deep-sea fish that belongs to the slimehead family. It has a reddish-orange color, a large head, and a compressed body. It can grow up to 75 cm in length and weigh up to 7 kg. It is very long-lived, reaching over 200 years of age. It is also very slow to mature and reproduce, making it vulnerable to overfishing. It feeds on prawns, fishes, and squid in cold waters of 500-1400 m depth. It forms dense aggregations over seamounts and ridges during spawning and feeding seasons.
