The sable once ranged right across the taiga, but human demand for its luxurious fur pushed it to the edge of extinction. Now found only in Siberia, the sable is beginning to recover its former populations in the wild, thanks to the commercial farming of caged sables. Like many forest predators, sables are strongly territorial and will only leave their usual hunting ground when faced with starvation for themselves or their young. |
