Eastern Milk Snake? of Maryland

This snake slithered up to our porch and hid under a fishing basket... I removed the basket very slowly and it did not move. This snake is about 10 inches long, probably a newly hatched snake.

We live in a wooded area bordered by a river.

These snakes are nonvenomous constrictor snakes and get to be about 24-26 inches. They eat small rodents, mice, birds, lizards and other venomous snakes. They will also eat earthworms and frogs.

The snake is a juvenile black racer, note the huge eyes and the fading pattern as it approaches the tail.

Yes, that's definitely a juvenile Black Racer...without question.
