The prominent, humped nose of the saiga is much more than just an organ of smell. Special tissues inside the nose filter dust and regulate the temperature of incoming air every time the animal breathes. Saiga occupy the flattest, most open grassland country; they shelter near rocks or mounds when winter gales blow across the land. |
