Red deer (Cervus elaphus)

During the mating season, male red deer often damage their antlers in combat with other males. Damage to the antlers reduces a male deer's fighting ability and therefore its chances of winning a mate for the season. The males shed their antlers in winter, but grow new ones in the spring, so that they can compete for a mate again in the following year. Male dominance within the herd undergoes continuous change.
