The king cobra is the largest poisonous snake, growing to around 5.5 metres (18 feet). If disturbed, the cobra rears up, flattening the skin around the neck area to form the characteristic hood - a posture designed to warn off the unwary. However, should the cobra strike, its venom is extremely toxic - strong enough to fell an elephant or men. |
