Giant Elephant Shrew (Rhynchocyon petersi)
Elephant-shrews are an ancient group that arose in Africa and never expanded
beyond that continent. They share a common ancestor, estimated to have lived
about 100 million years ago, with tenrecs and golden-moles, the aardvark,
sea cows (manatees and dugongs), hyraxes, and elephants.
