King cormorants inhabit Patagonia, the Falklands, Crozet Island and Macquarie Island. They return to the same breeding sites year after year, nesting on a deep layer of almost solid guano. In many areas guano is quarried as a rich source of phosphates and nitrogen for agricultural fertilizer. |
