Although the golden eagle inhabits many parts of Europe, ruthless persecution in the 19th century eliminated it from most of upland England, Wales and Ireland. Today, in Britain, the golden eagle lives only in the Highlands of central and western Scotland and in the Lake District of England. It often hunts grouse and ptarmigan - and occasionally lambs, the main reason why gamekeepers and farmers continue to persecute these splendid birds. |
