The axolotl reaches sexual maturity without changing from a larval state to that of a normal adult salamander. It remains in the water and broad tail characteristic of salamander larvae, in spite of its undeveloped appearance, the axolotl breeds successfully and usually completes the whole of its life cycle underwater. |
