북극여우 Alopex lagopus
개과에 딸린 여우의 하나. 머리통의 길이 50cm, 꼬리 25cm쯤이고 귀는 짧고 둥글며 주둥이는 뭉뚝하다. 여름털은 어두운 회갈색이며 목과 배는 황백색이다. 겨울털은 푸른색을 띤 회백색에, 머리와 다리는 갈색 또는 순백색을 띤다. 암수 한쌍씩 살며 북국 주변의 툰드라 지대에 서식한다.
