Pepe is an infant macaco-prego(Cebus Paella). He was rescued by IBAMA (the Brazilian environmental authority) at São Luis’ airport from the luggage of a tourist who was trying to smuggle him out of the country, and brought to this restaurant on the shore of the Preguiças river, next to a mangrove where many monkeys of the same species live, in the hope that he would find a new family there. To comply with the law, the people at IBAMA had a tiny red life vest custom-made for him for the boat trip down the river to his new home. Thing is, upon reaching his destination he didn´t want to part with the vest, and was thus rejected by the other monkeys who were probably put off by his extravagant sense of fashion. He eventually lost the vest but shunned the company of other monkeys anyway, preferring to live at the restaurant, where he spends his days in blissful abandon, being fed junk food and cuddling on the laps of tourists.
