Mute swan (Cygnus olor)
The mute swan is one of the most familiar of all the swans, since semi-domesticated birds are common on rivers and ponds in many urban areas of Europe. During the breeding season the males are aggressively territorial and readily threaten people that come to close to the water's edge by raising their wings in pronounced curves and uttering hissing noises. Physical attacks against people are occasionally reported, and broken legs and arms can result. |
