Red admiral, European butterfly with orange bars on the wings and black wingtips spotted with white. It flies from May to August. The caterpillar, which feeds on nettles, is dark with light side-stripes and branching spikes. Length: 1½–2¼ inches. Family Nymphalidae; species Vanessa atalanta. |
