Flammulated owl, Otus flammeolus, genus name: Latin, horned owl;
species name: diminutive of Latin, flammeus, flame-colored, or "small,
flaming-red". rare and local western owl with short ear tufts; 6-7
inches long, even smaller than pygmy owl, lives in ponderosa pine
forests from Rocky Mountains westward; largely nocturnal; has both a
gray and rusty phase. Only North American owl with dark eyes. Sings
often and persistently, primarily on moonlight nights. |
