Snake venom evolved as a means of killing or immobilizing prey, but in many species it has become an effective defence. The black-necked spitting cobra can force venom out through slots in the front of its fangs, and shoot it into the eyes of its enemy from up to 10 ft. away. Then, with its attacker temporarily or permanently blinded, the cobra can escape. |
