For the bank vole, hedgerows provide an excellent substitute for woodland habitats on agricultural land. The rodents shelter in shallow burrows in the undergrowth, and climb among the twigs of the hedgerow shrubs to nibble berries, flowers and buds. Hedgerows offer a refuge for diverse wildlife that could not otherwise survive in cultivated land. |
