Siberian Stonechat
The
Saxicola maura
is a newly recognized species ranging in the Philippines. It is found in grasslands and ricefields.
A fellow bird photographer tipped me on the sighting of this individual in the campus of the University of the Philippines, at Diliman, Quezon City. It took me two days of chasing and stalking over muddy rice paddies before I was able to approach the bird to get a decent photo.
The perch is a bamboo branchlet stuck in the middle of a ricefield, with out of focus rice plants as background. This is among the first photos of this species taken in-habitat in the Philippines.
