The striped hyena is listed by the IUCN as near threatened. Its population is estimated to be under 10,000 mature individuals. They are monogamous animals, with both males and females assisting one another in raising their cubs. The striped hyena is mostly active at night and returns to its lair before sunrise. Like other hyenas, the striped hyena is dog-like in appearance, with powerful forequarters and a back that slopes down towards the tail. |
