BEARDED COLLIES
One of England's oldest breeds, it is also called the "Highland" or
"Mountain" Collie. The Beardie was very popular in Victorian times, both in
the show ring and on the farms of southern Scotland. After World War I, the
interest in Beardies was show dogs was almost noon-existent. However,
because they were such superb herders and drovers, the Scotch Farmers
continued to breed them and they survived. A breed club was established in
England in 1955. Although brought to America in the late 1950's, they did
not become well established here until the late 1960's. The American Kennel
Club first registered the breed in 1976. The Beardie is a natural dog and
trimming or clipping is to be penalized in the show ring. The flat, harsh
outer coat protects the dog from the weather and the soft undercoat insulates.
