The mantle of the horned octopus is covered with numerous small warts. The head is narrower than the mantle. There is one barb on each eye. Generally, the arms are shorter than those in the musky octopus (Eledone moschata). There is only one row of suckers on each arm. The third right arm in males is much shorter and its tip is transformed into a hectocotylus. The horned octopus has 11 external gills.
The colour of the body is yellowish, reddish-orange or brownish-red with rust-coloured spots. |
