A close-up of a male Red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens)
during the breeding season. During the breeding season mature male
newts are easily identified by their broadly keeled tails, the hard
black patches on the inside of their hind legs, black toe tips and
swollen vents.

How can you identify a male in the non breeding season. I noticed two of my newts have these markings, but I don't recall seeing them earlier. Or is it that I only noticed it know since I have been seeing activity going on in my tank and got on the internet to find out about newts breeding.
