Bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus)

In the chilly Northern Hemisphere, Arctic waters are home to powerful bowhead whales, a large species of baleen whale that has a diet for some pretty small organisms, like plankton. Some of the only times that scientists are able to observe these mysterious whales is when they’re breaking through sea ice with their enormous heads. Because these whales do not have dorsal fins, they are often only visible as two dark gray bumps poking out from the water.
