Mountain Hare

The mountain hare is a creature of tundra and Boreal forest zones. On
continental mountain ranges it is rarely seen below 4,265 feet, though it occurs
on lower slopes in Britain. Its natural home here is the highlands of Scotland
and Ireland, but it has also been introduced to the Lake District, the Pennines
and the Peak District. Seen here in its winter coat, it is easy to distinguish
it from the brown hare, but as spring progresses the mountain hare's white
camouflage turns grey, so its shorter ears are then the best clue. Unlike the
brown hares, the mountain species digs shallow burrows in the summer that
leverets will use if chased, but young are always born above ground (three
litters each season). Most leverets are taken by foxes, and buzzards; wild cats
and golden eagles also take adults.
