The kakapo or night parrot, Strigops habroptilus, also called owl parrot, is a species of large, flightless, nocturnal, ground-dwelling parrot of the super-family Strigopoidea endemic to New Zealand. The kakapo was originally described by English ornithologist George Robert Gray in 1845. The name "kakapo" is the English transliteration of "kākāpō" which is derived from the Māori terms kākā ("parrot") + pō ("night"). Order: Psittaciformes, Family: Strigopidae, Genus: Strigops, Species: Strigops habroptilus G.R. Gray, 1845.
