The immense gill arches of the basking shark are revealed when the fish opens its mouth to trawl plankton. Externally, the gill slits are very long and almost encircle the body behind the head. The basking shark needs to take in about 1,500 tonnes of water an hour in order to filter one or two kilograms of food. |
