Arctic Voles

Northern
Red-backed Vole,
Clethrionomys rutilus

Northern
red-backed voles have long, soft, tan coloured fur with a bright reddish stripe
down the middle of their back. The name
Clethrionomys
means "bolt-toothed
mouse" and refers to the rounded enamel ridges of their teeth. Female red-backed
voles first breed at four months of age and, after a pregnancy of just 17-19 days,
give birth to 4-6 young. Roots, insects, spiders, fungal material, and grasses
comprise the diet of northern red-backed voles.
