Due to the increasing pressure of human populations in and around Zion, the native desert bighorn sheep were extirpated from the park in the 1950s. In the 1970s, over a dozen bighorn were reintroduced. Today, over 150 roam the east side of the park. Still a species of concern, park biologists closely monitor the health of the population in Zion. To catch a glimpse of these amazing animals is to catch a glimpse of what conservation and protection of a species can do in your national parks. NPS Photo/Jonathan Fortner
