The oilbird roosts and nests on the walls of South American caves, sometimes as far as a kilometre from the cave entrance. Emitting rapid tongue clicks, they navigate their way through the tunnels by echolocation. In caves with large colonies, the noises from thousands of birds racing through the passages can be deafening. |
