Western Pacific Odyssey
Figs. 14-15. White-necked Petrel Pterodroma cervicalis
Once considered
conspecific with Juan Fernandez Petrel of the eastern Pacific, this impressive
Pterodroma
is distinguished by the larger size, obvious white hindneck
(collar), stronger contrast between the dark cap and the mantle and also the
bolder markings on the leading edge of the underwing. Nests on the Kermadec
and Norfolk Islands. Also nests on Vanuatu, although Imber has argued that this
latter population (
P. c. occulta
) deserves full species status. Photographed
