멧비둘기(Streptopelia orientalis)는 한국 전역에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 비둘기목 비둘기과 조류로, 몸길이 33cm 정도에 몸 아래쪽은 회갈색, 날개 가장자리는 적갈색을 띠며 목 옆에 회색과 검은색 줄무늬 반점이 있는 것이 특징입니다. 시가지나 도시 근교에서도 자주 볼 수 있으며, 곡물, 열매 등 식물성 먹이를 주로 섭취합니다. 수컷은 번식기에 목을 부풀리고 울음소리를 내며, 암수 모두 새끼에게 '비둘기젖'을 먹입니다.

'산비둘기'라 불릴 정도로 사람을 꺼리던 멧비둘기들이 요즘은 닭둘기처럼 사람 근처에서 멀어지지 않으려는 경향을 보이고 있습니다.
