Relict Long-horned Beetle
Long-horned beetle (Callipogon relictus) was designated Natural Monument No. 218 in 1968 in Korea. The male beetle is approximately 12 cm long and the female is seven to eight cm long. The beetles were sighted on Mt. Pukhan-san, Kyonggi Province, and Puksang-myon, Ch'unch'on County, Kangwon Province, around 1945. These two areas were designated natural monuments but later lost this status when they were not properly preserved. Today long-horned beetles are only found in Kwangnung, a forest located between Uijongbu and P'och'on, west of Seoul, and near the Sogum River in Ch'onghak-dong, Kangwon Province. Their number is in sharp decline.
Scanned from a weekly magazine, "Newsmaker" No. 289, published in Korea. |
